Giovanni Foresti is a deeply insightful and wise psychoanalyst who has earned the respect of colleagues not only in Italy but also in Europe and America. Apart from maintaining his psychoanalytic practice at home in Pavia, he has pioneered the extension of psychoanalysis to groups and organizations, helping others to grasp the unconscious processes that pervade our lives outside our consulting rooms. Understanding those processes enables us to manage our work relationships more effectively, avoiding many conflicts and detecting opportunities to cooperate.
He has used this knowledge and skills to organize successful conferences, promoting these ideas, as well as to function as a highly effective hospital administrator.
Striking out on these pathways has not been easy, not only because it requires the acquisition of additional skills and capacity for inquiry that our institutes seldom provide, but also it requires working outside the institutions and theoretical frameworks with which most analysts are familiar. This is an important and potentially very fruitful application of psychoanalysis, and he has shown himself to be a highly effective leader.
